“Do you know how long we’ll be staying here?” Nana asked Yoon Sung as she set down the coffee on the coffee table for Yoon Sung.
“I talked to Ahjussi the other day and we decided to continue to stay in Seoul for a little longer.” Yoon Sung said as he took a sip of his coffee.
“Can you just explain to me what’s going on—”
“I can’t.” He cut her off.
“I know you hate it when I get involved in your business but I have the right to be curious.”
“I know. I’ll tell you when things are confirmed. Right now you just have to trust me and keep the curiosity down.” He would tell her… if only he knew that Eun Jung wasn’t asleep in the bedroom a couple feet away.
Eun Jung listened to their conversations all the time. Even when they didn’t know it. And so far she had been hearing about this Ahjussi all the time. She needed to find out more about this Ahjussi. From what she had heard, this Ahjussi seemed to be someone they both knew and trusted well.
Eun Jung knew she needed to bond with Yoon Sung. If he continued to dislike her, her job would just get harder and harder. Closing her eyes to a deep sleep, she knew she had to develop a good relationship with Nana and Yoon Sung as quick as possible.
Back to Yoon Sung and Nana, they both sat in a comfortable silence, while Yoon Sung enjoyed his cup of coffee.
“I ordered a bed and rented a car.” He said as he turned his attention to Nana. “Since we might be staying here longer.”
“A bed?” Nana asked him.
“The bed we have is too small. Your long hair keeps getting in my face when I sleep. And you keep drooling on my arm.” He complained, although he loved her long locks and how peaceful she looked when she was asleep.
Nana rolled her eyes playfully and hit his arm. “I do not drool!”
Yoon Sung chuckled and finished his cup of coffee. He looked over briefly at Nana who was messing with her hair and reminded himself. Her birthday is coming up next month.
But in fact his own birthday was coming up even sooner. Yoon Sung had two birthdays. One that was recognized by people which was actually John Lee’s birthday. Another was his real birthday, the day father survived the sweep mission. And he never officially celebrated his real birthday because father would never make note of it. It was too horrible of a memory to father. According to Yoon Sung’s real birthday, he was still 27. He would turn 28 in a 2 days. Nobody would know of his birthday besides his mom. But according to John Lee’s birthday, which was the birthday he went by, he already turned 28.
**[I didn’t want to make this confusing, I just wanted to make it as realistic as possible. Because I looked up the Rangoon Bombing, which was the day of the actual explosion in Burma that City Hunter was based off of, and it was in October. It wouldn’t make numeric sense for Yoon Sung to be already 28 if this took place in the summer and fall of 2011. However in the show, Yoon Sung was portrayed as 28. So I decided to think in the writer’s shoes and came up with this idea. Or maybe the writer wanted this to take place in 2012? I don’t know but for this fanfic, this is how it’s gonna be.]**
Yoon Sung didn’t plan on celebrating his birthday. He didn’t plan on telling Nana either. He was John Lee to everyone else so he had to act like John Lee. And he changed John Lee’s identity to an orphan. He didn’t change his birthday because it would be too obvious to change it on the day of the sweep mission and the day of the bombing. So he needed to put up an act for everyone that didn’t know of his past.
As Yoon Sung was lost deep in his thoughts like always, he felt Nana’s head plop on his right shoulder. He looked over to find a sleeping Nana. She must’ve been exhausted to fall sleep like this.
He tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear tenderly and smiled to himself as he just silently analyzed the side of her face. Yoon Sung finally decided to carry Nana into their room successfully without disturbing her sleep. He placed her down on the bed carefully. Just Nana’s peaceful sleeping face comforted him.
Afterwards he went to the bathroom to brush his teeth quickly and went back to the bedroom. As he went into the bedroom and tried to sleep, he couldn’t. So many things were boggling his mind, he couldn’t sleep. Getting up from the bed and walking back out to the living room, Yoon Sung poured himself a glass of water. Although he remained calm on the outside like a shield all the time, he was actually worried about the hazy situation with the Thai men in America right now. Not only that, he was also trying to think of something special to get for Nana. And on top of that, he was paranoid that on his real birthday, something would happen. He just had that bad feeling about it. Because it was something that marked the sweep mission, it had always frightened him. His birthday was not a prestigious one, father almost died from it, father’s best friend died from it, and his real father (the president) made a decision that changed his whole fate.
He finished his glass of water in one long gulp and poured himself another glass. He was planning on drinking water until he could clear up his mind. He wasn’t sure if it was the coffee or just his mind or both. He didn’t want to share his worries with Nana because he didn’t want Nana to worry with him. He hated it when Nana always wanted to suffer with him.
His thoughts were interrupted as he heard footsteps coming out of the other bedroom. He glanced over to find Eun Jung yawning and walking towards the kitchen.
“What are you doing up in the middle of the night?” Eun Jung asked as she blinked a couple times to clear her vision from her tired eyes.
“I could ask you the same.” Yoon Sung moved over, realizing Eun Jung wanted a glass of water as well.
“I’m a light sleeper and was woken up by your glass clinking when you took it out from the cabinet.” She poured some water and drank it swiftly. “You seem to be deep in thought.”
“It’s nothing you need to know about.” Yoon Sung looked the other way.
“Come on now.” She walked closer towards him. “You’re dating Nana. Nana’s my cousin. We live in the same house. Stop acting like I’m an alien. We should try to get along.”
“I never said I didn’t want to get along with you.” He lied. He still didn’t like Eun Jung.
“How about this… If I guess what you’re pondering about correctly, you’ll try to get along with me just for Nana’s sake.” Eun Jung proposed a deal.
“This is stupid.” Yoon Sung laughed slightly. “I’m going back to bed.” He walked away from the kitchen.
“I’ll help you pick a present for Nana.” Eun Jung said and stopped Yoon Sung from his tracks.
“How’d you…” He turned around and looked at her strangely.
“Oh please, do you really think I’m stupid? I know her birthday is coming up soon. And I mean what else would you be thinking about so deeply at night without Nana’s presence and enough for you to suffer from insomnia?” She said. What else was there for Yoon Sung to worry about? Probably a lot. He should worry about the potential danger of his identity and his loved ones all the time. Eun Jung thought to herself. “Lee Yoon Sung ssi [ssi is used when addressing someone you’re not so familiar with and to address someone politely], I think it’s time you start breaking that wall of pride you put in front of yourself. I’m Nana’s cousin and I will be living with you guys for a while, so try getting along with me. It won’t kill you.”
Yoon Sung thought about this option for a few seconds as they stood in silence. Although that was not the only problem he was pondering about. Maybe he should start putting himself in Nana’s shoes. It would be hard for Nana to see the two people she loved to loath each other all the time. As much as he disliked Eun Jung and felt suspicious about her, he had to consider Nana’s feelings. He wasn’t selfish. At least he didn’t want to be. He didn’t want to fight with Nana because of a girl as flamboyant and insignificant as Eun Jung again. It was pointless. He didn’t have to let his guard down just to get along with someone, so why not try to? And plus, he really did need help on finding a nice meaningful present for Nana anyway. Eun Jung seemed like a smart, quick, and stylish woman. It wouldn’t hurt to get some useful advice. “Well…”
“Can I just take that as a yes?” She cut Yoon Sung off.
“That’s only because I really do need the help.” He turned around and walked into the bedroom.

“Yoon Sung?” Nana woke up to find Yoon Sung missing from her side. She got up from her bed and looked around the small apartment. Both Yoon Sung and Eun Jung were missing. She checked her phone for the time and realized it was already noon. She walked towards the kitchen for a drink of water and found a note on the fridge.
Met this guy at the club a couple of nights ago, I’m going out to get lunch with him. – Eun Jung.
Nana smiled at Eun Jung’s note. Of course she would have met a boy already. She was so outgoing and pretty. Now her second question was where Yoon Sung went. She texted Yoon Sung on her iPhone and while waiting for his reply she went to the bathroom to brush her teeth.
__
“This would look great on her!” Eun Jung praised. “Nana has a great figure!”
“Nana has no curves…” Yoon Sung said. “This won’t do.”
“One thing men are all good at is lying.” She rolled her eyes. “You love Nana’s figure and her curves and you know it, but you refuse to admit it.” Eun Jung walked over to the other section of the fancy store.
Yoon Sung laughed and thought of Nana’s petite figure, their height difference, and her long brown hair. And at the same time, he felt his phone vibrate. Taking out his phone from his pocket, he read a text from Nana, “Where did you go?” it read.
He texted her back quickly, “You weren’t up to make me coffee so I had to go out and get a cup of coffee.”
Putting his phone back into his pocket, he walked towards where Eun Jung was looking. “Yah, you’re not really helpful. It’s been an entire morning and you’ve found nothing. We need to hurry up and I need to get back soon.”
“Yoon Sung ssi, remember I’m only here to help, you should be looking harder.” She retorted.
As Yoon Sung looked around the store, he ended up in the jewelry section and found himself staring at a diamond ring.
“Are you gonna propose to her?” Eun Jung asked. “That would be so cute! I won’t tell her!”
“No. It’s too dangerous.” Giving this mysterious and ambiguous answer, he looked away from the ring and shifted his attention to a necklace. From just an outsider, the word dangerous would have simply described how his plan of proposal would be dangerous if Eun Jung knew, since she would tell Nana. But to Yoon Sung, it was dangerous because anyone who was related to him by law and documents would be put in danger. At least for now since his identity as the City Hunter was only a thing of a couple of months ago. It would take at least a year for his identity to be safe again.
“What do you mean…” Eun Jung could see his sad and lonely eyes from the side of his face. This man must be lonely. He was always concerned with others around him. Although Eun Jung didn’t know what he meant by dangerous and it seemed to have a hidden meaning behind his fake identity, she knew Yoon Sung was not only a difficult man, but also a lonely one.
“This one is perfect.” Yoon Sung pointed to the necklace that matched the diamond ring. “I’ll get her the necklace for her birthday.” It was a simple necklace with a heart around the diamond.
After purchasing the pricey necklace, Yoon Sung also bought the ring when Eun Jung wasn’t looking. He wanted to propose to Nana soon but it was none of Eun Jung’s business. He knew that if her cousin knew, she would most definitely tell her.
Before exiting the store, another thing caught his eye… a wallet. The wallet he planned to gift her last time wasn’t successful, maybe he should make up for it this time? After the purchasing the light blue wallet, Yoon Sung finally exited the store.

Nana finished baking the cake and sighed in accomplishment. She had started preparing the fruits and decorations for the cake a couple of days ago. It would be Yoon Sung’s birthday tomorrow. She wanted to surprise him. Ahjumma had told her about his real birthday and Nana wanted to surprise Yoon Sung by having Ahjumma and Shik Joong Ahjussi come on the day of his birthday. She felt excited just thinking about it. Yoon Sung didn’t mention his birthday to her at all and she wasn’t surprised. Yoon Sung liked to bottle things within himself.
As she hid the cake behind some cans of soda and containers of yogurt in the back corner of her fridge, she checked on the rice, vegetables, and chicken she was cooking for lunch. She cooked for both herself and Yoon Sung. Smiling and waiting for Yoon Sung to come home. Nana turned on the TV and sat down on the couch.
__
“That necklace and the wallet were both perfect! Aren’t you glad I helped?” Eun Jung grinned.
Yoon Sung laughed pitifully and walked in front of her.
“Why are you walking so fast? Are we going back now? Why aren’t you going back to your car?”
Yoon Sung ignored her questions and walked into a nearby shop that sold photo frames and cameras. The necklace and wallet were not special enough for someone Yoon Sung put in a special place in his heart. He needed to think deeper. So he came to a conclusion, he decided to buy a nice photo frame to frame the picture Nana gave him of them together. He broke the frame because he lost his temper that day. He wanted to make up for it and frame it nicely.
“What are you looking for?” Eun Jung asked him as she walked in after him. “Are you buying her a camera?”
Yoon Sung continued to ignore her annoying questions and headed to the counter. “Hi, I would like to have a custom made photo frame—”
“Lee Yoon Sung ssi…” Yoon Sung heard a familiar voice call his name and turned around to find Jin Sae Hee, Prosecutor Kim Young Joo’s wife.
Eun Jung looked toward Sae Hee as well and remembered her face from somewhere… Where have I seen her before? She looks a bit familiar… As her memories started to flood back to her, she remembered. On Eun Jung’s first day of work in Seoul , she was settling her stuff into her desk at the prosecution office. And opening the first drawer to the desk, there was a picture of Prosecutor Kim Young Joo and his wife. She gave it to Jang Pil Jae and he said he would give it back to the Prosecutor’s wife. It was left there because he had forgotten to clean that out.
How did the Prosecutor’s wife know Lee Yoon Sung? Eun Jung thought to herself. There was definitely more to Lee Yoon Sung than just what Prosecutor Jang, Jang Pil Jae, and Aunt Mi Ok had been telling her and knowing about. When Kim Young Joo died, he had took his extended knowledge and investigations on the City Hunter with him and now she had to find those pieces of information back.

Not much Yoon Sung/Nana moments here but I had to get the story going. Please comment. If everyone who read this commented, it would really make my day :3
And a commenter told me that Eun Jung reminded her of Jae Kyung from Boys Over Flowers. I'm glad someone got where my inspiration came from! I actually based it off of Shigeru from Hana Yori Dango (the Japanese version of Boys Over Flowers). And Shigeru was the same character as Jae Kyung. Except Shigeru was even more energetic/loud/shameless.

Aww YS is just so sweet. <3 He may not be the expressive type, yet he can't really hide how much he loves. NN. :)
ReplyDeleteI love how you brought back the memory of Prosecutor Kim in this chapter. The ending they gave him is just so devastating. :(
Haha now that Ha Jae Kyung was mentioned, her image as Eun Jung will be imprinted on my mind from now on. If she turns out to be like our monkey girl, then I don't think there's any reason for me to hate her. :)
^_^ Thanks for posting regularly! I'm so stressed with college apps...and school....occasionally visiting this blog and finding a new post makes me ECSTATIC. I'm practically jumping for joy! haha <3
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the plotline! My only fear is that you will finish this story one day. :/
Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteYes! I was waiting for Sae Hee to show up, thank you! Really enjoying this so far, thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love you for writing this, really. I have to congratulate you on this awesome fanfic with veery few mistakes and request you to please keep writing and make it a long story. It's flowing so smoothly, I can tell you have a true talent for writing. Also, I have to say: I'm sooo happy that someone (moreover, a good writer) decided to write a fanfic for the City Hunter DRAMA, since I'm so addicted to it that I can't get enough. Thanks for sharing this with us, and keep it up even past the latest chapter please. I love your work. And btw, don't worry about there not being enough romantic moments. Romance was not the main reason I watched and loved the drama, though I did and still do enjoy it, it's really sweet and I love the interaction between Na Na and Yoon Sung that you portray here. However, I'm more curious about what problems they will be facing from now on. Even if romance is your main focus, those moments are only like a bonus to me. :P
ReplyDeleteI really amaze that u noticed a small things like Yoon Sung's age (which he probably change his identity, that his age is not 28 but 27). So, he is the same age with NaNa, don't u think??
ReplyDeleteof all the co actors lee min ho has worked with... Park Min young is my favourite...they dated also...dont know if they still are together...i was really unsatisfied with city hunter's ending.... Boys Over Flower's was okay....but city hunter was unacceptable! thank you for satiating my hunger for a better ending.... by giving it a new beggining<3
